Six years ago tonight, I went on a date with a fella. We nervously met up between our two places of residence (he San Diego, me Los Angeles). It was pre-season football and we shared a couple pints with a soft pretzel and mustard. I was late due to the fact that I was never very good at allowing enough time for LA traffic. It was the best first date of my life and it was also the last first date. I recall being a major disaster that night. I was an absurd mess, wearing the wrong color bra with a very low cut shirt thingy. I was late by nearly an hour, spilled beer on myself, couldn’t string together complete thoughts, giggled too much, and made him laugh at me after that first kiss.
A first kiss that lasted about hour in the parking lot. Because, man, we were over the moon for each other. We haven’t stopped sucking face like that since that night.
I met this guy blogging over on Live Journal. After communicating in comments for a short time, we moved to email and then shortly after we started talking on the phone. From the phone, he asked me to go grab a beer. After I said yes, he let me know it was a “date”. It was a swift courtship. We adored each other
almost immediately. It was really bonkers when I think about it.
We “met” (online) in July. We went on that first date (our first in-person meeting) in August. We were engaged the next August. We were married the following May. Boom!
When you know, you know. And in our case, we just knew.
Six years later, I still go on beer dates with this guy. We share the shelter of this life together. He’s my favorite person and my bestest friend. Even better than all that, he’s an amazing father to this amazing child of ours.
Six years ago, that beer date changed my life for the better at a time when nothing made any sense in my life. Today, I sit here writing all this and feeling deeply thankful knowing everything is so clear now. This is my life, and it started with a single comment on a blog.
